What is a leader? Webster has several definitions, but here are two: (1) a person who had commanding authority or influence; (2) a person who leads. Leading in networking marketing is indifferent. Take both definitions and a leader would become: a person who has developed a commanding ability to communicate with his team and move them in a preset direction.
This post is intended to instill some of the basics for the new MLMer about what is a True Leaderand Fake Leader. Use these to ensure your focus is becoming a TRUE LEADER!!!
It is far-from-complete list, but these are the 5 most important characteristics that I found doing some research on Google and events in my life over the last 30 plus years.
Arrogant and phony "so called" Fake Leaders portray him/herself as the best. True Leaders do not. Not much more simple than that.
(1) Fake Leaders over-emphasizes "duplication"; creating clones because clones are disposable. Hmm... I do not know about you but "being disposable" does not ring that well in my ear and I'm sure does not in your ears as well.
Fake Leaders, often say "don't invent the wheel, bring the prospect to me and I will close it", "Not let me help you anyway I can with your new prospects and I will HELP you close it." I wonder why that is? Fake Leaders, most of the time, only know one way to conduct their business. Their way!!!
They fear anyone else on their team getting credit for anything of having them in the spot light...I remember a time myself and a friend was going to do training for a company we both were part of and was told STAND DOWN!!! Leave that to the Leaders, we were told...Now remember this was part both of our teams we had built and we were trying to be True Leaders and help our team...I wonder why I was told STAND DOWN? I think we all know. FEAR; Thinking no one else can do it as well as your can.
True leaders would design a plan for each new associate. When you joined your new business...Did you get a warm welcome, offers to help, made feel like part of the team when you join your last business? Understand this and never forget it. That a New Associate (Family Member) is always a valuable part of your team, not disposable!!!
(2) Fake Leaders typically never stop talking. They do not allow the team to ask questions or comment.
True leaders will listen and communicate. Fake Leaders will keep talking and talking from one topic to the next and alienate the team. Thus, the team does not progress or ever grow or feel like a leader.
True Leaders listen and moves the team forward by asking the right questions, not just declaring what's right and wrong. Network marketing requires involvement of everyone in the network.
(3) Fake leaders typically do not have much respect for the team. Comments and suggestions are often shrugged off. They are often very biased and hard-headed in their opinions. Will do all they can to hold you back, never put you in front of the team. "Put you down if you don't do what they say"
True leaders should treat you like a friend; with respect and should be open minded to others' thoughts and suggestions. Simply put, True Leaders are interested in their people - their ideas, their complaints, their fears, their successes - THEM!
(4) True Leaders are focused on the growth of their people, While Fake leader are concern about the growth of their bonus check. *If you only get called from your leaders because its hurting their check.....WOW!!! THIS SHOULD BE A BIG RED FLAG!!!* If you follow them carefully, most time you hear their buzz phases "the number game", "make more money".
(5) Fake leader are more concerned about the rapid movement and leaves a trail of dead bodies, while the true leader build a relationship and trust and helps you succeed.
Now you know some key characteristics of MLM leaders. Focus on one characteristic at a time, and try to improve on it everyday. You can begin at anytime.
Your leadership practice starts in your daily life. All of the people your meet, you are involved way, you influence and lead in some form or another.
A true network marketing leader doesn't wait until he/she gets a large group before becoming a leader. It can't work that way, because you would never get the large group if you're waiting to be leader first! Nor does the leader wait until they feel they possess the knowledge to lead - rarely they do.
Leading does NOT mean dictatorship. If you find you are becoming a dictatorship or being suppressed by one, you need to change you or your environment immediately.
Always remember, True Leaders are led by the people they lead.
Hope some of these pointers help. Even as I was writing this, I see areas I can improve on as a Leader for my team and will strive to do a better job myself. Making mistakes is OK...as long as we learn from them
